Actors From The London Stage, now housed at the University of Notre Dame, is an educational and theatrical program that brings a troupe of five classically trained British actors to college campuses for week-long residencies featuring workshops and minimalist, electric, full-length productions of a Shakespeare play.

AFTLS returns to UT for an exhilarating week of workshops, related events, and two performances of Measure for Measure on the UT campus and one at the Winedale Historical Center during the week of September 18-23.

Performances of Measure for Measure will be held at the Bates Recital Hall (in the Butler School of Music Building) on UT Campus, Wednesday, September 20 and Thursday, September 21 at 7:30pm. After these two performances on campus, the ensemble will move out to the Winedale Theatre Barn near (Round Top, Texas) for one special night. The Winedale performance will take place at 7pm on Saturday, September 23.

In Measure for Measure the Duke of Vienna, dejected by his inability to remedy his city's moral ills, leaves his duties in the hands of a zealous deputy, Angelo. As Angelo struggles to clean up the city, his strict enforcement of the laws leads to the imprisonment and impending execution of young Claudio. When Claudio’s sister, Isabella, begs Angelo for mercy for her brother, Angelo is tempted to stray from his righteous path to one of sin and deception.

In addition to these performances, there are a few special events that will take place in conjunction with the AFTLS residency.

Prior to the arrival of Actors From The London Stage, a free Shakespeare and the Law reception and panel will be held on Thursday, September 14 in the Eidman Courtroom at the UT Law School at 6:30pm. This free event includes a performance of scenes from Measure for Measure by The Spirit of Shakespeare Players, followed by a panel discussion on “The Very Mercy of the Law” featuring Alan Friedman (Coordinator, AFTLS), David Kornhaber (Coordinator, AFTLS), Angela Littwin (UT Law), and James Loehlin (Director, Shakespeare at Winedale).

On Friday, September 15 at 3PM, panel members Alan Friedman, David Kornhaber, and James Loehlin will lead a free British Studies Talk, “The Scope of Justice”: Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure in the Tom Lea Room at the Harry Ransom Center.

Enrich your day with "BritishContemporary Poetryat Poetry on the Plaza on Wednesday, September 20 at noon on the Harry Ransom Center Plaza. AFTLS company member, Anna Wright, will share a reading of such contemporary British poets as Don Paterson and Roddy Lumsden.
