Actors From The London Stage Residency at UT Austin featuring performances of Twelfth Night

Actors From The London Stage, now housed at the University of Notre Dame, is an educational and theatrical program that brings a troupe of five classically trained British actors to college campuses for week-long residencies featuring workshops and minimalist, electric, full-length productions of a Shakespeare play.

AFTLS returns to UT for an exhilarating week of workshops, related events, and three performances of Twelfth Night on the UT campus and one at the Winedale Historical Center during the week of September 16-23.

Performances of Twelfth Night will be held at the Bates Recital Hall (in the Butler School of Music Building) on UT Campus, Wednesday through Friday, September 18 - 20. After these three performances on campus, the ensemble will move out to the Winedale Theatre Barn near (Round Top, Texas) for one special night. The Winedale performance will take place at 7pm on Saturday, September 21.

One of Shakespeare’s most popular comedies, Twelfth Night sends audiences on a roller coaster of love and mistaken identities. When Viola is shipwrecked on the foreign coast of Illyria, believing her twin brother drowned, she disguises herself as a boy, only to fall in love with the Duke she now serves, who loves Olivia, who is loved by Malvolio, who is hated by everyone. This play is a delightful and bewildering comedy that highlights the madness that afflicts all lovers.

In addition to these performances, there are a few special events that will take place in conjunction with the AFTLS residency.

Prior to the arrival of Actors From The London Stage, Dr. Wayne Rebhorn will lead a free British Studies Talk, “Carnival in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night: Delirium in Illyria" in the Tom Lea Room at the Harry Ransom Center on Friday, September 13 at 3PM.

Later that same day, there will be a free Shakespeare and the Law reception and panel held in the Eidman Courtroom at the UT Law School at 6:30pm. This free event includes a performance of scenes from Twelfth Night by The Spirit of Shakespeare Players, followed by a panel discussion on "If there be any law in Illyria" featuring David Kornhaber (Coordinator, AFTLS), Angela Littwin (UT Law), and James Loehlin (Director, Shakespeare at Winedale).

Enrich your day with "An Englishman Abroad: I have gathered a posie of other men's flowers and nothing but the thread that binds them is my own" at Poetry on the Plaza on Wednesday, September 18 at noon on the Harry Ransom Center Plaza. AFTLS company member, Al Barclay, will share a reading of modern romantic poetry.
