WATCH: Indrani Chatterjee delivers guest lecture at Queen's University, Ontario, Canada
March 24, 2016, Prof. Indrani Chatterjee spoke on “Provincialising British Abolition: 1807-1843 from the Perspective of Precolonial South Asia” at Queen's University, Canada, in the Department of History's 2015-2016 Lecture & Seminar Series. The talk begins by revising the theory and treatment of property in the classical and medieval subcontinent. It then revisits the context of the late eighteenth century and early nineteenth century in the Indian subcontinent when a colonial regime of property was established. It ends with locating ‘liberation’ of slaves as a method of recruitment for colonial armies, navies, and workshops. View the event information.
