Welcome to MALS

Message from the chair

Welcome to the Department of Mexican American and Latina/o Studies (MALS). Since opening our doors in the Fall of 2014, we have quickly built a national and international reputation as the premiere department, offering students an array of rigorous degree programs that train them to be among the most competitive Latina/o serving professionals in the nation.

With the recent launch of our study abroad program in Mexico City, the LLAMA Sociolinguistics Laboratory, and the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship program, University of Texas students have access to some of the most innovative collaborative forms of research offered in Latina/o Studies to date. Our students go on to careers in the non-profit, education, social service, governmental, and academic sectors, all with an eye towards working with Latina/o populations.

As the inaugural chair of the Department of Mexican American and Latina/o Studies at The University of Texas at Austin, I invite you to support our students or discover the approaches and professional advantages our academic programs offer, for what happens in MALS truly changes the world, one student at a time.
