Internal Transfer
Behavioral and Social Data Science is a restricted major.
The Department of Psychology accepts internal transfer applications for BSDS for Spring and Fall admission.
Fall applications for Spring admission open on September 15th and close on December 1st.
Spring applications for Fall admission open on February 1st and close on May 1st.

- Attendance at an Information Session or Completion of the Info Session Quiz during the academic year in which you are applying.
- Be enrolled in or have completed one of the following courses with a C- or better:
*AP, IB, Dual Credit, and Transfer Coursework are allowed.- BHD 301
- PSY 301
- PSY 317L
- 3 hours of upper-division Psychology coursework
- BHD 315
- E 310D
- 3 hours from the Humanities concentration
- Have completed 12 hour in-residence for a letter grade by the end of the semester in which you are applying.
- Have completed no more than four (4) long semesters at UT by the end of the semester in which you are applying. Transfer students who have completed four (4) or more semesters at their previous institution are eligible to apply only within their first two long semesters at UT-Austin and must also meet the above criteria for in-residence hours.

- Can I meet with an advisor to discuss my sitation?
- Advisors cannot meet with prospective students.
- Unfortunately, due to the volume of applicants, BSDS advisors are unable to support individual meetings or academic advising for prospective internal transfer students. We encourage you to attend an information session.
- How many students are accepted into Behavioral and Social Data Science each year?
- The number of students admitted varies each semester based on the number of seats available in the major.
- I attended an info session last year. Do I need to attend another one?
- Yes. Our policy requires that all internal transfer applicants attend an information session during the current academic year. Students who do not attend an information session at all, or who do not attend one in the current academic year are not eligible to apply for internal transfer to Behavioral and Social Data Science.
- I’m already in COLA. Do I still need to apply and meet eligibility requirements?
- Yes. All students must meet the eligibility requirements, even those already in COLA
- I did not complete the course eligibility requirements in residence. Am I eligible to apply?
- Yes. Students are eligible to apply if they have not completed the course requirements in-residence.
- Some classes, such as BHD 301, PSY 317L, and BHD 315, for example, may only be offered at UT Austin.
- Do summer courses count toward the application?
- Courses taken during the summer after you submit your application will not be considered in your application review. You must have all requirements completed at the time your application is evaluated.
- I do not have ALL of the required courses for internal transfer. Can I still apply?
- Yes. Students are required to have completed or be enrolled in one class by the end of the semester in which they apply.
- I do not have ANY of the required courses for internal transfer. Can I still apply?
- No. The bare minimum requirements to meet elegibility inlcude a single course from the list above. Appeals will not be accepted.
- I have not attended an info session. Can I appeal?
- No. Appeals to waive the info session requirement will not be approved.

- I have exceeded 4 long semesters. Can I appeal?
- Yes. An appeal essay is required, and you will be prompted to submit the appeal essay as part of your application. You will need to thoroughly explain any extenuating circumstances and provide a plan for completing the degree in a timely manner. Appeal approval is not guaranteed.
- I wish to apply as a double major. Do I need 30 hours in-residence to apply?
- No. You just need 24 hours in-residence, whether you are applying to transfer to BSDS or add it as an additional major.
- I would like to work towards another major in case I am not accepted to Behavioral and Social Data Science. What are some open major options?
- We encourage students to work with their current advisor to choose an open major as a back-up plan. There are many open majors within the College of Liberal Arts.
- Is it possible to enroll in BSDS courses prior to acceptance?
- Yes, if you meet the prerequisite and the course is not reserved. Courses listed "open;reserved" on the course schedule are reserved for current ECO majors and minors until the last day of the initial registration period.
- Because BSDS is an Interdisciplinary Program (IDP), some courses may not be accessible to all students even though they may be listed on as a major requirement. All BSDS students must abide by the rules and restrictions of the departments we utilize classes from.
