Students may come from a wide variety of backgrounds and academic majors, but they share a commitment to the study of Arabic and a talent for learning languages. After completing the program, our students plan to work in government, international business, academia, law, journalism, international development, and many other global professions.

To be eligible for the program, applicants must:

• Be currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student or admitted to UT Austin 
• Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
• Demonstrate the commitment to and potential for achieving superior proficiency in Arabic

 

I am not a UT student, can I still apply?

You must be accepted for admission to UT to be eligible for our program. If you are a transfer student, you must first gain UT acceptance. If you are currently a high school student, you must first gain UT acceptance. 

I am a graduate student, am I eligible?

No, the AFP is aimed at undergraduate students. As a graduate student you should look for funding such as Teaching Assistantships and UT Graduate Fellowships. For more information on available graduate funding, please see the Middle Eastern Studies website.

How good does my Arabic have to be?

You may be at any level of Arabic, including a complete beginner if you are an incoming freshman.

I am a native speaker of Arabic, am I eligible to apply?

It depends on your level of proficiency in Arabic. If you speak and read Arabic fluently
and are already at or above the Superior level, this is not the best match for
you. However, if your level is in the Intermediate to Advanced range of
proficiency, you are welcome to apply.

Do I have to be a Middle Eastern Studies or Arabic major?

No, the AFP accepts students from any major and is particularly interested in
applicants that come from other disciplines such as business, engineering,
journalism, natural sciences, and social sciences. 

 

How is my application evaluated?

The selection committee considers your commitment to Arabic, as demonstrated by your past performance and attendance at classes, your career plan as it pertains to Arabic, your teacher recommendation, and GPA.

Students accepted into the AFP agree to meet the following terms and conditions:

• Make consistent progress toward reaching Superior proficiency in Arabic
• Earn a “B+” or better in all Arabic language courses
• Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0
• Complete the three-year Arabic language curriculum at UT (Intensive Arabic I – VI), followed by at least one year of Arabic content course studies
• Enroll in at least one Arabic course each fall and spring semester
• Participate in weekly meetings with an assigned AFP language partner
• Complete all required proficiency tests and interviews
• Complete an intensive summer Arabic program in the Middle East (optional, but strongly recommended)
• Complete the Arabic Overseas Flagship Capstone year
