The immersive experience studying Arabic abroad is a fundamental component of the Flagship program. The AFP study abroad programs build on the foundation laid by domestic study at UT and provide students with the resources and training they need to reach Superior proficiency.

  • Capstone Year in Meknes, Morocco

During the Capstone year, students build their skills in Modern Standard Arabic, Moroccan Daarija Colloquial, and Egyptian or Levantine Arabic. Students also enroll in courses at Moulay Ismail University in Meknes where they have the opportunity to interact with Moroccan students and experience a Moroccan style classroom.

Students also participate in a range of other activities that complement the classroom experience. They complete at least one internship while in Meknes to utilize their Arabic skills while developing their professional skills. Past student internship locations have included:

    • The Agency for Social Development
    • The Stables for the Royal Guard of Morocco
    • The Association for Women's Development of Tulal
    • The Mohammed V Hospital

When can I go? After you've completed all required Arabic classes and all UT courses required for your degree.

How long is it? Approximately one calendar year, June - May

    Is it required? Yes

How do I qualify? Submit an application and achieve ILR 2 proficiency in reading, writing, listening and speaking.

  • Safety During Overseas Study

AFP staff at UT work in close coordination with UT Education Abroad, The Language Flagship, and our partners abroad to ensure the safety of Flagship scholars overseas. We also work with these partners to prepare our students for their education abroad experiences. Scholars engage in a series of coordinated orientation sessions before departure. These sessions take place throughout the semester prior to departure. These sessions present information on a wide range of subjects relevant to the study abroad experience, from health and wellness, to gender issues, to safety and security.

A full-time, on-site Resident Director is present abroad to provide assistance, guidance, and advice to students while abroad. Students also have access to resources from UT Education Abroad, including a 24-hour hotline that students can call for guidance on a wide range of travel-related issues.
