  • 1. How do I apply for a scholarship?

  • 2. What does an Air Force scholarship give me?

    A scholarhip, dependant on the type, will pay for your tuition and fees for the college you go to, give you a book stipend of $900.00 a year, and a grade stipend of $250.00 a month for your freshman year, $300.00 sophomore year, $400.00 junior year, and $450.00 your senior year; all of which is tax free.

    In addition to the scholarship benefits, joining the AFROTC program means joining a tight-knit community of individuals linked by a passion for leadership, service, and community. On top of that, there are even opportunities for paid summer programs where you can travel the world and build valuable leadership and life experience.

  • 3. Do I need to have an AFROTC scholarship to join the program? 

    No, an AFROTC scholarship is not required to join the program. Any student at UT who meets the requirements can join. You can earn scholarships based on academic achievement, and leadership potential. If you are interested in joining Det 825 email brett.cook@austin.utexas.edu.

    IN-COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM (ICSP)

    If you’re already in college, you can still experience the benefits of joining Air Force ROTC. In addition to detachment-specific scholarship opportunities, freshman and sophomore students may be eligible for the In-College Scholarship Program (ICSP). The program awards scholarships based on merit during two selection phases (fall and spring semesters). 

    TYPE 1

    Reserved for Commanders’ In-College Scholarships (CICS) offered to cadets pursuing a technical major. It pays 100 percent tuition and authorized fees. Selectees also receive a monthly living expense stipend and an annual book stipend.

    TYPE 2

    This is awarded to all cadets selected through the In-College Scholarship Program (ICSP) and pays up to $18,000 per year in college tuition. Scholarship payment is further capped at up to $9,000 per semester or up to $6,000 per quarter. Selectees will also receive a monthly living expense stipend and an annual book stipend.

    GENERAL CHARLES MCGEE LEADERSHIP AWARD (CMLA)

    This in-college scholarship is awarded to all individuals not already on scholarship who receive an enrollment allocation and thus are selected to commission into the Air or Space Force. It pays $18,000 per year for two years and cannot be applied to graduate studies.

    Housing Benefit: Any scholarship awardee will be allowed to convert their award for a $10K-per-academic-year “housing scholarship” used for on-campus housing. This is for room only; board is not included, and the conversion must begin at the start of the fall academic term if exercised.

  • 4. What are the requirements to join AFROTC?

    U.S. CITIZENSHIP - Applicants must either be a United States citizen or obtain U.S. citizenship by the last day of the first term of their freshman year.

    MEDICAL - Applicants must pass a Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board (DoDMERB) medical exam. Applicants will either be scheduled to take the physical exam at the nearest military base or be sent to a designated civilian contractor.

    ACADEMICS - SAT composite of 1240 or ACT composite of 26. Super scores are not accepted. Cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.0 or higher.

    FITNESS - Complete the Physical Fitness Assessment, which consists of three events: push-ups, crunches and a 1.5-mile run. If offered a scholarship, you must pass the Physical Fitness Test before the end of your first semester of college.

  • 5. What is a typical week for a freshman in ROTC?

    A typical week for a freshman is 5 hours of AFROTC events (breakdown below), the rest of your time is based on your course schedule and your own discretion.
    Leadership Laboratory is twice a week for 1 hour each session.
    Physical training is twice a week for 1 hour each session.
    Air force Science class is once a week for 1 hour.

  • 11. Are you required to live on campus as a cadet?

    No, at UT cadets are not required to live on campus.

  • 12. What kind of degree do I need to get a scholarship?

    Scholarships are given out to all degrees. However, a technical degree is considered more valuable to the Air Force than a non-technical degree. Because of this more scholarships are given to students majoring in a technical degree, but non-tech scholarships are still given out. If you are unsure whether a degree is technical or not, the following list is of technical degrees: any Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Meteorology (not offered at UT), and Architecture.

  • 13. Will the Air Force pay for me to get my masters?

    Yes, the Air Force will pay for someone in the Air Force to get a masters. However, it is not possible for the Air Force to pay for everyone's. Instead it's based off of the needs of the Air Force.

  • 14. Will I receive an academic minor for AFROTC?

    Yes, if you complete 15 semester credit hours of Air Force Science, Naval Science, or Military Science courses including 6 hours of upper division coursework, you will receive a minor in military leadership.
