Suggested Timeline for Completing the ACL MA/PhD

Below is a suggested timeline for completing the requirements for the Asian Cultures and Languages MA/Ph.D. in a timely manner.

ACL MA

  • Complete ANS 395Proseminar in Asian Studies
  • Complete Asian History course
  • Complete electives
  • Start coursework in Major Area of Specialization
  • Apply for external funding for summer study abroad and for the second academic year of the ACL MA
  • Summer abroad or completing intensive language study
  • Complete Major Area of Specialization coursework
  • Complete Advanced Asian Language requirement
  • Complete Master’s report and graduate with Master’s degree
  • Present Master’s report research at graduate student or regional conferences
  • Apply for external funding for summer and following academic year
  • Summer abroad or completing intensive language study

ACL PhD

  • Continue taking coursework for Major Area of Specialization
  • Start coursework in second Asian language or research language
  • Start coursework in Minor Area of Specialization (can be primary language of study)
  • Continue taking coursework in primary language of study (if it is not the Minor)
  • Complete Research Methods requirement
  • Present original research at conferences
  • Apply for external funding for summer and following academic year
  • Summer abroad or completing intensive language study
  • Continue taking coursework in primary language of study
  • Complete coursework for Major Area of Specialization
  • Continue coursework in second Asian language or research language
