PhD candidate in Asian Cultures & Languages

Sanskrit, Prakrits, Tamil, foodways, dietary manuals, and food prescriptions of South Asia, animal studies and animal speech, Hindu traditions, Buddhist traditions, yogic traditions

My research brings animal studies to Asian studies, primarily building non-anthropocentric ways to evaluate animal voice, speech, and language in philosophical, religious, and fictional texts from South Asia. I am also continuing to develop my long-running project on birds as teachers as represented in Indic traditions. My second main research project concerns South Asian foodways, focusing on early prescriptions and what I call "proto-recipes", food manuals (both ayurvedic and dharmashastric), and the development of cookery books in India.
