Korean
Korean is the official language of North and South Korea and is spoken by around 78 million people worldwide. Most linguists consider Korean to be a language isolate (one not descended from any common language family) although some believe it to be similar to Altaic languages. For much of its history, the Korean writing system used adapted Chinese characters called hanja, but in the 15th century, a national writing system called hangul was commissioned by Sejong the Great. Previously the study of Korean in the U.S. has been dominated by Korean language heritage speakers, but in recent years this group has become much more diverse due to growing interest in South Korean music and television.
