Eden's Islands:                                          Translating Empire in Tudor England

                         Barbara Fuchs (UCLA)

         Tuesday, October 29 at 3:30 p.m. (HRC 3.206)

What can a translator's working copy tell us about the ideological vectors of translation? Richard Eden's heavily annotated copy of Peter Martyr's Decades of the New World, now in the Johns Hopkins University collections, offers extraordinary access to the mind and methods of a translator who was one of the earliest advocates for England's expansion into the Americas.
