BIES Research Working Groups

The Program in British, Irish, and Empire Studies (BIES) will continue its Research Working Group pilot program in the 2024-25 academic year. Please contact the Director of BIES for more information.

Description:

BIES aims to foster focused dialogue, intellectual exchange, and expert feedback among researchers with shared areas of interest through its Research Working Groups. BIES will provide support for several lunchtime meetings per Research Working Group in AY 2024-25. Each BIES Research Working Group should consist of at least four and no more than seven members, including at least two faculty members. It is up to each Research Working Group to determine the format and goals of its lunchtime meetings. BIES especially encourages Research Working Groups that provide members with opportunities to share in-progress writing. In consultation with the Director of BIES, each Research Working Group may also be eligible to receive support to invite one scholar from outside UT to campus to share current research.

How to Apply:

Each proposed Research Working Group should complete ONE application. In addition to some basic information, the application requires each proposed group to submit a single PDF that briefly addresses the following: (1) the title of the proposed Research Working Group; (2) a brief explanation of the focus of the proposed Research Working Group (including an indication of your topic's relationship to BIES); (3) the goals of the group; (4) a provisional plan for the format of the lunch sessions (how often you hope to meet, whether or not you will workshop work-in-progress at each session, etc.); (5) a list of all members of the proposed Research Working Group that includes name, email address, UT EID, home department, institution (if other than UT), and current designation (e.g. faculty, postdoc, graduate student); (6) any additional information (optional).

Decisions are made on a rolling basis.

Have an idea for a Research Working Group, but still trying to identify fellow participants? BIES may be able to help! Contact J.K. Barret, Director of BIES, at jkbarret@austin.utexas.edu to discuss possibilities.
