AI can be one of many beneficial tools to use in your job and internship search or for career exploration. It is best to use it as a complementary tool to help you brainstorm or augment your materials.

Use AI to augment your own creativity and voice. This helps you speak to your abilities in interviews, especially when asked about application documents you may have asked AI to create.

  • AI comes with the internet’s inherent bias. To avoid this, be specific in your prompts, avoid generalizations, and critique the output.
  • Make sure to secondarily verify output from AI.  AI pulls information from the internet at-large which means you may run the risk of having copyrighted material in your finished product. This is why it’s important to make sure your product is as original as possible.
  • Don’t input personally identifiable information or legally protected material into these programs.
  • Scan the generated text for common words over used by AI, overly formal tone, complex sentence structure, and vague statements. These traits are easily recognized as AI produced. Adjust any text generated by AI to match your writing style and remove unnecessary words.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be one of many tools to use in your job and internship search or for career exploration and preparation. It is best to use it as a complementary tool to help you brainstorm or augment your materials.

  • AI in the Hiring Process

Employers and applicants are increasingly utilizing AI in the hiring and application processes.

    As an applicant:

    • Read applications carefully for any mention of a company's policy on using AI in your application. Some employers like Greenhouse and Merit America have guidelines for using AI in their interview process.
    • Research the company's policies for employee AI usage
    • Do not submit entirely AI generated materials or use AI generated answers in interviews. Recruiters can spot these responses and your application will likely not be distingushable from other applicants who used AI.
    • Be aware of what roles you are you are utilizing AI for. If you are applying to a role that requires detailed writing skills, be particularly cautious when using AI generated text in your application, as employers want to see your writing skills and attention to detail.
