Data Analytics

  • AT&T

    Summer 2017

    Position: Data Analyst Intern
    Student: Economics and Engineering Junior

What do most people think of when they hear of “AT&T?” They likely hold up their phones and commend their favorite cell service provider for its exceptional commitment to the overall customer experience. When you intern at AT&T, you work with and meet people who are passionate about improving the customer experience with the best products and services in the industry. AT&T is not just a telecom/wireless services company, it is a technology and media company as well. This is something most interns aren’t aware of when they first start at AT&T. Though yes, the acronym stands for American Telephone and Telegraph, clearly AT&T does not even offer telegraph services anymore. It has withstood the test of time and has evolved to meet the demands of the most tech-savvy consumers. AT&T is transforming itself into a media company; with the news surrounding the potential Time Warner acquisition, AT&T is set to take over a new industry. Interns will be able to work on projects involving Game of Thrones (HBO) and even major news platforms such at CNN.

I am a Data Analyst intern, which means I must have a penchant for math and statistics. Throughout this internship, I was challenged to think on my feet technically and qualitatively. The leadership specifically informed us of their interest in our work and their desire to hear from us at the end. Therefore, from the start I was determined to contribute something to AT&T. A typical day for me consisted of coming in between 8:00 AM – 8:30 AM, which was a time that I was allowed to pick, thankfully. I would open my inbox and respond to any emails and messages received. Then I would reconvene with my intern team and speak to them about the plans for the day. We would discuss our plans and then get right to work on the models and data sets we were given to work on. At some point, it becomes lunch time and I go down to the cafeteria and play ping pong. Once I return from lunch the scripts we run to calculate values from the data sets are usually finished and we have some results to look at. We discuss the findings and determine whether or not they are significant. If so, we report the findings to our supervisor and end the day. As you can see, my internship involved a lot of teamwork.

    Position: Sales Operations Analyst Intern

A day in the sales operations team starts with a morning huddle, which the interns and their manager to plan out a day’s agenda and exchanging updates of work projects. In the morning, as an intern, you will have mainly two tasks, preparing data analysis and presenting the data insights discovered. • Service Group

    Fall 2017

    Position: Business Intelligence Analyst Intern
    Student: Economics Senior

My internship is at Service Group and I am a business intelligence analyst intern. At my internship, my roles are to get familiar with basic SQL and database design and I did this by getting trained using online courses that were provided for me. Part of the internship was to learn fundamentals of business intelligence such as validation of reports written for their F & I executives, documentation of Qlik view applications, and schedules of crystal reports. By learning all of this it has helped me know a lot of basic data analytics skills that will help get a position in any analytics field. This is important because a lot of companies/job positions require basic knowledge of SQL and knowing how to analyze data. If anyone is interested in business analytics this would be a great internship for them. Without experience in SQL and analyzing data I was able to receive that at Service Group.

I will explain what I have done so far at Service Group. Since I am new to business intelligence my supervisor has given me training videos on SQL and Crystal reports. The first and second week I began training on SQL. I watched a 5-hour tutorial and then was given a project from my supervisor. She told me to create SQL queries for specific account agreements on dealers. I put the data I found on an excel sheet. The type of SQL that I am doing is very basic. My supervisor mentioned that it gets complicated to write a SQL query when they include JOIN or GROUP BY. Also, these queries could be several lines long and what I’m doing is just 4 to 5 lines long. During my lunch break I like to play around with SQL and challenge myself by creating complex queries. So far, I have been successful and I also like to ask my supervisor and the other employee for help.

On the third and fourth week, I have been introduced to something different called Crystal reports. I’m currently being trained on this and have been taught the basics such as how to format, sort, and group a report. The more advanced material will be creating a SQL query to bring up the data and then grouping and sorting the data to how the dealers want it to be formatted. My supervisor did mention that Crystal reports can sometimes get challenging when the accountant spots a number that is off on the report. When this happens, it is my supervisors job to investigate what the problem is with the data. This could take hours to figure out and sometimes she will have to rewrite the query.

Towards the last few weeks at my internship I have been given several tasks like schedule reports for the risk management team. I also have been validating data to make sure that the data is not missing anything such as a digit or a decimal. When I have to do this, I have to be very focused because I don’t want to miss something and then risk management will not be happy about it. Overall this has been a wonderful experience for me and I am very thankful to have had this opportunity.

Let me explain more about this company. Service group is a dealership insurance company. This type of company is not what I would have chosen just because it is corporate and very traditional. Even though I was given this opportunity at Service Group and I have learned a lot I know for sure I wouldn’t be able to work there as a full-time employee. If anyone likes a structured environment, prefers a 9am-5pm job, doesn’t mind a traditional atmosphere, and likes sitting all day then this would be a perfect company to work at. Also, you don’t have to love cars to work at Service Group. What is most important is that you are an expert at your field. As a college student, I believe you should work at any company that gives you an opportunity to learn and receive hands-on experience. I recommend that even though it’s not your type of company just accept the offer and learn a lot.

  • SocialWithin

    Spring 2018

    Position: Data Analyst Intern
    Student: Philosophy Senior

During the Spring of 2018, I interned at SocialWithin, a growing performance marketing agency here in Austin, Texas. I specifically interned as a Data Analyst in which I was tasked in sifting, visualizing, and analyzing marketing data for each and every client in the company’s portfolio. My day to day consisted with working with excel and cleaning up raw data from various platforms, analyzing particular KPIs per client per week and visualizing in a condensed and straightforward manner for the client. The client and the account manager within our company associated with that client would then utilized the report that I would generate to drive their continuous strategy. Additionally, if a client was to be faced with a strategic problem regarding that marketing performance, it would be my job to do ad hoc analysis within their whole marketing scheme in order to find a solution. Because SocialWithin primarily works with Ecommerce businesses, in order to properly find a solution to any given problem, I would have to look into either the client’s Google Analytics, Shopify account, BigCommerce account, or any backend for their various ad platforms. And lastly, beyond reporting general KPIs and doing ad hoc analysis for any given problem what would arise for the client, I would also do various projections and benchmarking analysis as a means of supplementing the Accounts team. This consisted of use mathematics and various statistical modeling in order to project and benchmark future performance for any given client, specifically in regard to their revenue and ad budget spending. Most of my tasks on the day to day consists of either utilize my skills in mathematics or statistics or using one of the various tools to clean, analyze or visualize data. These tools consist of Microsoft Excel, Tableau, and Google Data Studio. If you were to walk into our office in any given day, you would see me in either of the three tools aforementioned.

  • The Boon Group

    Summer 2016

    Position: Product Management
Student: International Relations and Global Studies Senior
I started working at the Boon Group the 6th of June of 2016, my role was that of intern in the product management department. I arrived slightly before 9:00 am, since during the first days of the internship at nine in the morning, the CEO gave a conference call in which he talked about the company’s updates, like successful sales, client feedback and other events. I would then serve myself a cup of coffee and start whatever work I had been assigned.

The work I was often assigned primarily dealt with the analysis of extensive data, and the mapping of it, principally in Excel. The data came from the company’s files and archives but also from customer relationship management software like Salesforce, Confluence, Contribution Depot, Jira, among others. The analysis of the data, was very busy work, since the archives needed to complete tasks were very extensive.

The data was extensive since it came from and was used sometimes by all the other departments. The purpose of the analysis and mapping was to detect the inefficiencies in the system, (like field duplicates, files in wrong archives and ghost phone numbers). I mapped this inefficiency in excel and then delivered them to my supervisor, who proceeded to integrate the data into the product cycle. At the end of the cycle, the data was utilized on a presentation to the executives to let them known the inefficiencies in the system and the solution for them. The executives would either implement the solution or send the product back to the cycle, where a better solution would be figured out. I usually finished my day at 5:00 pm or later if I had work pending.

  • USDA Wildlife Services

    Spring 2021

    Position: Data Analysis Intern
    Major: Sustainability Studies Senior

The mission of The USDA APHIS Wildlife Services (WS) is to provide Federal leadership and expertise to resolve wildlife conflicts to allow people and wildlife to coexist. In Texas we resolve conflicts with various species on both private and public property which allows the various ecosystems around the state to thrive. I found this internship through family and friend connections. When I began this internship the State Director had a specific project which he assigned to me for the duration of the internship. I was to develop a non-lethal approach to managing livestock and predator relations in Edwards County. This required collection of data through MIS, analysis of data, and creating multiple alternatives to this problem depending on funding, supplies, and time constraints. My favorite thing about this internship was the collaboration with professionals of all different backgrounds and the openness of sharing insight behind this and other projects.

  • Social Solutions

    Fall 2021

    Position: Data Intern
Student: International Relations and Global Studies

I am currently working remotely as a Data intern at Social Solutions. The company develops technology to support the entire social good community - including nonprofits, public sector agencies, philanthropists and ultimately, the people they serve. Social Solutions helps organizations collect, organize, and interpret their data to better understand and communicate their impact. I then set up some cold calls with employees that I met via LinkedIn, and decided I really wanted to apply to get more exposure to the intersection of tech and social good.

I have several daily duties that mostly consist of Salesforce support to my team. I check my ATLAS cases daily, which mostly consist of resolving duplicate accounts or transferring account ownership in Salesforce. I also do fiscal research on a lot of new accounts to gather more robust data on potential clients. Finally, I conduct post-sales pipeline interviews with accounts where I learn what went right, what went wrong, technology needs, etc. with accounts that were either recently won or recently lost by a member of our sales team. My favorite part of the internship experience has been the wide array of networking opportunities that have been granted to me; I’ve been able to collaborate cross-functionally for several cases and have talked with a ton of really cool people that have given me valuable career advice.
