Thousands of pottery fragments (sherds) are recovered from archaeological excavations and surface surveys in the Mediterranean area every year; the stories they have to tell are fundamental to the prehistory and history written about the region.  Pottery contains clues about trade, industry, technology, crats, environment, lifestyle, food, cooking, social structure and much more.  Pottery is also used to establish chronologies.  This class will teach you how to extract these kinds of information from a single sherd.  We will consider various approaches to pottery--art history, experimentation, ethnography, scientific analysis.  We will explore a variety of analytical techniques--ceramic fabric analysis, manufacture, seriation, petrography, geochemistry, scanning electron microscopy, organic residue analysis.  Classes will combine lectures with hands-on analysis of sherds, as well as the experimental manufacture of pottery in bonfires.
