Paula Perlman earns Outstanding Graduate Adviser Award!

Paula Perlman, has been named Outstanding Graduate Adviser for 2015. Dr. Perlman has been the Graduate Adviser in the Classics Department twice; first from 1992-1996 and again in 2008-present. From 1998-2000 she was GSC Chair and last year she assumed this role again, in addition to Adviser.

Dr. Perlman meets with every student every semester pre-candidacy and she attends every dissertation colloquium and oral defense. Dr. Perlman is trusted by all the graduate students in the department and they know that she has their best interests and those of the program's at heart.

Last year Dr. Perlman instituted a regular meeting with all the graduate students each semester. At graduate student request this year she is also adding a meeting with each individual cohort to address issues specific to that year. There are also occasions when she will hold an ad hoc meeting on a  specific subject. In the last few years Dr. Perlman has also instituted various forums for faculty and graduate students to interact outside of the Department. She started a tradition of First Friday potlucks where a graduate student, or several graduate students, presents research in a relaxed atmosphere at the home of a faculty member, very often her own.

Last Spring the Department underwent an external review. Not only was Dr. Perlman's institutional knowledge and memory invaluable in compiling the self-study, she wrote most of the 100+ pages single-handedly. This year the department will be discussing a complete overhaul of the graduate program to promote completion of the Ph.D. in six years. Unsurprisingly Dr. Perlman is leading the charge on this.

Congratulations Dr. Perlman!
