Professor Karl Galinsky awarded honorary doctorate

Karl Galinsky, the Floyd A. Cailloux Professor of Classics and University Distinguished Teaching Professor, has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the faculty of philology at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum in Germany.

Professor Galinsky, who was awarded a Max-Planck Research Prize in 2009, has divided his time since then between UT Austin and Ruhr University in Bochum, where he directs an international research project on Memoria Romana, exploring the function of cultural and historical memory in ancient Rome.

The project now numbers 31 grantees, including 14 doctoral students, from multiple countries and disciplines, such as art, literature, archaeology, religion, and political history. Memoria Romana also sponsors international conferences, including one here in 2010, another at Bochum last year, and again this Fall at the American Academy in Rome.
