Sergio Barrera
The Carlos E. Castañeda Fellow for 2022-2025 is Sergio Gael Barrera. Dr. Barrera finished his Ph.D. from the Department of American Culture at the University of Michigan in 2022. He is currently working on his manuscript Disidentified Brotherhoods: Rethinking Latino Masculinities, Performance, and Homosociality. Dr. Barrera is interested in the concepts of decolonial and queer Latinx and Black masculinities, kinship, belonging, and the performing arts as a tool for heteropatriarchal resistance.

Paulina A. Serrano
The Carlos E. Castañeda Fellow for 2024-26 is Paulina A. Serrano. Dr. Serrano’s academic research is inspired by her personal endeavors as a lifelong athlete. She competed in Olympic weightlifting while completing her master’s at Cal State, Fullerton. During her two-year stay at UT Austin, Serrano will focus on turning her dissertation “Deportistas! Mexican Women, Sporting Citizenship, and Belonging in Twentieth Century America” into a book manuscript. She also hopes to engage in digital research to bring visibility to Latina sporting projects and to teach a MALS course on Latinx Sporting Spaces. Dr. Serrano has teaching experience and a PhD in History and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies from Penn State University.

Paulina A. Serrano

Dr. Richard Grijalva, whose research centers on how discourses and practices of political spirituality shaped notions of México as a national entity in the early nineteenth century. A particular topic of interest is Fray Servando Teresa de Mier, a Mexican friar who played a significant role in the fight for Mexican independence and whose papers reside at UT's Benson Latin American Collection. Enrique Dávila, who studies the history of reform movements in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands at the turn of the twentieth century, in particular the populist activism of Mexican and Mexican-Americans who confronted economic and racial discrimination by pursuing equality, dignity, and unity in a newly transformed and globalized border region. (2021-2023)
Cecilia Valenzuela, whose research highlights the literacies and knowledges shared and produced by young adult Latinx students who explored sound and audio technologies through embodied, digital and mobile listening practices. Specifically, it examines the complex ways students use sound to renegotiate their political locations and articulate the affective dimensions of their lives. (2019-2020)
Sandibel Borges, investigates how heteronormativity, white supremacy, and exploitation are naturalized and institutionalized within migration processes, and their impact on Latinx LGBTQ migrants in Los Angeles, California and LGBTQ returning migrants in Mexico City, Mexico. (2019-2020)
Edna Ledesma, the spatial configuration of the 21st century American city, in particular the landscape of immigrant populations, micro-economies, and how inclusion within the design process can build more pluralistic places. (2018-2019)
Rebeca L. Hey-Colón, the connections between the Caribbean diaspora, Chicanx communities, and broader Latinx Studies by analyzing the presence of water, in particular, the relationship between water, borders, bodies, and spirituality in Chicana and Caribbean Latina authors. (2017-2018)
Wanda Alarcón, decolonial feminism, U.S. third world feminism, sound studies, popular music, and Chicana literature; in particular, 80s soundscapes in Chicana Literature. (2016-2017)

Priscilla Leiva, stadiums both as sites for and sites of consumption to understand the ways in which the meaning of stadiums has shifted since the postwar era and how these shifts serve as critical windows into how cities and franchises managed racial, ethnic and gender difference over time. Isabel Millán, children's media that challenges “childnormativity,” or the ways in which children's cultural productions replicate normalcy and its relationship to transborder children's cultural studies as a disciplinary bridge between studies of girlhood, children, Latinidad, and queer theory. Monica Muñoz Martinez, state-sanctioned racial violence in the early twentieth century southwest Texas, particularly the efforts of women and families to reclaim political rights and rebuild their communities in the aftermath of lynching and the strategies utilized by Texas residents and Mexican immigrants to demand public reckoning with the long legacies of racial terror.
