FAQs
Language Requirements, Course Work & Major
- Must I have been an English or Comparative Literature major to get in to the Ph.D. program?
No.
- Do I need transcripts from schools that are not four-year colleges?
No, but you must include an official transcript from every 4-year college you have attended, even if you attended there only for a short time.
- Can I apply even though I have not yet graduated with my B.A.?
Yes—but you will be required to present evidence of your graduation (with an official transcript showing "degree conferred") before you join our Program the following fall.
- How many languages must I know to be considered for admission into the program?
You will need to demonstrate competence in two other languages in addition to your first (dominant/preferred/native) language in order to be considered for admission and in order to succeed in the program. (This does not mean that you have to work in three languages for your dissertation.)

Application Timeline
- When will I hear an admission decision?
Usually by late February or in March, but each admissions year is different. We'll communicate when our final decisions are made.
Admission status information is available in MyStatus.
- Why does the decision process take so long?
Each complete application is compiled into a dossier that receives multiple anonymous readings from the faculty.
Once the Admissions Committee has identified those applicants who have earned the greatest faculty interest and enthusiasm, the really labor-intensive process of building a cohort begins. This process takes time to ensure each applicant is given adequate consideration.
- Does the program have an in-person interviewing process, and if so, is it advantageous to visit UT for an interview?
No.
