Japan Program
While the Japan program primarily offers degrees through the Department of Asian Studies, it is possible to study Japan in several different departments while making uses of resources in the Department and other parts of the university. The Department was established in 1994 to provide a focus within The University of Texas at Austin for the creation and dissemination of knowledge about Asia. The goal of CEAS is to use the academic resources of The University of Texas at Austin to promote international cultural, economic, and political understanding of Asia in both the UT Austin campus and the broader Austin Community.
Each year, the program sponsors a number of events to actively promote Japanese studies at The University of Texas at Austin. The Japan program hosts international symposia, conferences, and meetings in co-sponsorship with the Center for East Asian Studies and the Department of Asian Studies. As part of the yearly schedule of visiting lectures, distinguished visitors from Japan, as well as Japan specialists from other American universities, visit Austin to contribute to the intellectual life of our University.
The program also supports University of Texas scholars doing research in Japanese Studies in the humanities and social sciences. Major financial support from Mitsubishi Caterpillar Forklift America, Inc. also provides fellowships to assist undergraduate and graduate research, as well as faculty research and publications development, and to invite distinguished visiting scholars to teach about Japan.
The Japan program offers courses in the language, history, economics, political science, culture, religion, film and literatures of Japan. To find out more about the degrees offered through the Department of Asian Studies visit their website.

Spotlight: Dual Degree MA
The Department of Asian Studies and the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs of The University of Texas at Austin offer a dual-degree program leading to the Master of Public Affairs and the Master of Arts in Asian Studies. The program combines advanced policy studies with interdisciplinary area studies, which provides a thorough understanding of Asian politics and cultures.
