Taiwan Program
Launched in Fall 2009, the Taiwan Studies program at the University of Texas at Austin is the first of its kind in the United States. While the Taiwan Studies program primarily offers degrees through the Department of Asian Studies, it is possible to study Taiwan in several different departments while making uses of resources in the Department and other parts of the university. The Department was established in 1994 to provide a focus within The University of Texas at Austin for the creation and dissemination of knowledge about Asia. The goal of CEAS is to use the academic resources of The University of Texas at Austin to promote international cultural, economic, and political understanding of Asia in both the UT Austin campus and the broader Austin Community.
Each year, the program sponsors a number of academic events to actively promote Taiwan studies at The University of Texas at Austin. The Taiwan Studies program hosts international symposia, conferences, and meetings in co-sponsorship with the Center for East Asian Studies and the Department of Asian Studies. As part of the yearly schedule of visiting lectures, distinguished visitors from Taiwan, as well as Taiwan specialists from other American universities, visit Austin to contribute to the intellectual life of our university.
The program also supports University of Texas scholars doing research in Taiwan Studies in the humanities and social sciences. Major financial support from the Taiwan Grant also provides fellowships to assist undergraduate and graduate research, as well as faculty research and publications development, and to invite distinguished visiting scholars to teach about Taiwan.
The program offers courses in the language, culture, film, literature, history and society of Taiwan.
