Biography


Dirk Mateer is the author of Economics in the Movies (2005), Essentials of Economics (2015, 2021), and Principles of Economics (2013, 2017, 2020). Dirk’s work has appeared in the Journal of Economic Education on seven occasions. His website: dirkmateer.com houses over 500 media assets that relate economics to popular culture. Dirk is also an award-winning instructor. He has been featured in the "Great Teachers in Economics" series and he was also the inaugural winner of the Economic Communicator Contest. While he was at Penn State, he received the George W. Atherton Award, the university’s highest teaching award, and was voted the best overall teacher in the Smeal College of Business by the readers of Critique Magazine. While at the University of Arizona, he received the best large class lecture award in the Eller College of Management and the University’s Koffler Teaching Prize, a quadrennial award for his contributions in economic education.

This course provides an introduction to the theory of how consumers and business firms behave in the market economy. The topics include demand and supply in a competitive market, optimal consumption choice by the individual household given its budget constraint, the producer's costs and output decisions, the demand for labor and other inputs, and economic outcomes under product demand structures ranging from perfect competition to pure monopoly.
