Is admission to the Economics major competitive? Is there a GPA cut-off?

No, currently there is no GPA requirement and approval is not on a competitive basis. Our goal is to accept all students who want Economics as their major as long as they meet the eligibility requirements.

Do I need a minimum number of credit hours completed to apply?

No.

Is there a maximum number of hours taken or semesters completed to be eligible to apply?

No. We will accept students who have exceeded 60 or 90 hours.

I need to declare the major now in order to graduate on time!

We definitely want to support your efforts to graduate on time! The first courses required for the major are not reserved and you may sign up for them as long as you meet the prerequisites. View the prerequisite flow-charts here.

The following courses are typically reserved: ECO 420K, ECO 420S, ECO 441K, ECO 320L, Advanced ECO electives, ECO electives with writing flags. Non-majors may register for reserved upper division Economics courses on the last day of registration provided stated prerequisites are met and if seats are available. ECO 101S is reserved for current ECO majors only and does not open to non-majors at any point.

I still have questions. Can I talk to an advisor? If you still have questions about the major or the application process, please attend one of our information sessions. Information sessions are REQUIRED for declaring the major. We cannot meet with prospective students at this time. For any other questions please contact: ApplyEcon@austin.utexas.edu
