RSO Support
- What's an RSO?
RSO stands for "registered student organization," which the university defines as a student-operated group formed around a common interest. RSOs have the right to use university facilities, raise funds and make solicitations on campus, and invite guest speakers. Unlike sponsored student organizations (such as TEA or ODE), RSOs do not represent the university or department and do not have general operational funds, but they can apply for limited monetary awards to host events.
RSOs must maintain registration with the Office of the Dean of Students.
- What support can Economics provide to RSOs?
The Economics Department can provide limited funding and use of rooms in BRB to RSO events when the events meet all of the following criteria:
- The requestor is an economics major or graduate student and an officer of the organization.
- The event must comply with Texas SB 17. Among other things, this prohibits events from being designed or implemented in reference to race, color, ethnicity, gender identity, or sexual orientation.
- The event is open to all UT Austin students, and is advertised on Hornslink or in another way that reaches a significant number of students outside of its membership.
- The event supports the mission of the economics department or its students.
- Events such as alumni panels, professor panels, and career or financial literacy workshops generally qualify for department sponsorship. Events where the primary purpose is socialization, peer networking, or relationship building generally do not.
