The Department of Economics at the University of Texas at Austin is nationally recognized for its research and teaching. It is the intellectual home of approximately 40 economists, 100 Ph.D. students, 50 Master’s students, and 3000 undergraduates. Economics affects everyone, and learning economic concepts helps us make financial decisions, understand current events and public policy, and predict the future. The study of economics intersects with a broad range of disciplines and applications, including health, mathematics, education, the environment, computer science, immigration, and the law.

2nd Annual “Tex-Mex” Industrial Organization Conference

The Department of Economics will be hosting the 2nd Annual “Tex-Mex” Industrial Organization Conference on April 9 and 10th. The conference is jointly sponsored by the University of Texas-Austin and Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM). The conference will take place in the Robert L Patton Building.
This year’s speakers include Eric Richert (University of Chicago), Eugenio Miravete (University of Texas-Austin), Rebekah Dix (Yale University), Adrián Rubli (ITAM), Ashley Langer (University of Arizona), Gordon Gi (University of Texas-Austin), Krzysztof Zaremba (ITAM), Guilia Brancaccio (New York University) and Jackson Dorsey (University of Texas – Austin)

Department Chair | Tom Wiseman
Tom Wiseman joined the UT Economics Department in 2001 after completing his Ph.D. at Northwestern University. His research focuses on game theory and microeconomic theory. He has served as Chair of the department since 2021.

About Us
The Economics Department is one of the largest departments within the College of Liberal Arts, with over 500 students graduating each year.
Undergraduate Program
The undergraduate program trains students to think objectively and independently about a wide range of economic topics. With an emphasis in the application of mathematics and writing skills, this program prepares students for professional careers in industry, finance, government, law, and teaching.
MA Program
The MA program offers a rigorous curriculum with quantitative training that prepares students for careers in the public and private sector. This program also allows students to complete an MA degree in as little as 10 months.
Ph.D. Program
The Ph.D. program equips students for academic careers with an educational emphasis in economic theory, statistical methods, and field application. In addition, students are brought to the top of their discipline by an active series of research seminars as a supplement to their coursework.
