Dr. Joy Penticuff
Ph.D., RN, FAAN
Distinguished Teaching Professor; Lee and Joseph Jamail Professor Emerita, School of Nursing
Dr. Penticuff earned her BSN from the Medical College of Georgia, her MSN in Pediatric Nursing from Case Western Reserve University, and her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Case Western Reserve University. Her research focuses on ethical issues in health care, with particular emphasis on justice in the allocation of scarce healthcare resources, patient/family involvement in ethical decision making in end-of-life care, ethics in genetic testing and therapies, and perinatal ethics. In recognition of her outstanding contributions to the field of ethics and neonatal care, she was inducted into the American Academy of Nursing in 1988. She was inducted into The University of Texas at Austin Academy of Distinguished Teachers in 1998 in recognition of her distinguished teaching. Dr. Penticuff is a member of the Steering Committee of the Ethics Project, The University of Texas at Austin.
Dr. Scott Stroud
Associate Professor of Communication Studies, President of the American Society for the History of Rhetoric, Editor of Media Ethics
Dr. Stroud is the Director of Media Ethics for the Center for Media Engagement where he leads the Media Ethics Initiative. His research focuses on various topics at the intersection between communication and philosophy. He is the author of John Dewey and the Artful Life and Kant and the Promise of Rhetoric, as well as the co-author of A Practical Guide to Ethics: Living and Leading with Integrity. Presently, Dr. Stroud is completing a book manuscript that tells the story of Bhimrao Ambedkar’s brush with Deweyan pragmatism at Columbia University and how it shaped his innovative pursuit of social justice in India. Stroud’s other work also engages topics in media ethics, comparative/non-western thought, religious rhetoric, and narrative theory. His research has been published in venues such as the Journal of Media Ethics, Rhetoric Society Quarterly, Philosophy & Rhetoric, Rhetoric & Public Affairs, the Journal of Communication and Religion, the Journal of Aesthetic Education, Advances in the History of Rhetoric, and the Journal of Speculative Philosophy. In 2014-2015, he was a visiting fellow at the Center for the Study of Democratic Politics at Princeton University.
