Undergraduate Research Assistantship Program

Each semester the Department of French and Italian offers several undergraduate positions where students can gain experience with faculty-led research and curriculum development, as well as peer-led instruction. Each program has two positions – one undergraduate assistant, and one undergraduate research assistant. 

Undergraduate Assistant in French

 

Undergraduate Assistant in French

The Department of French and Italian at the University of Texas at Austin is currently accepting applications for one Undergraduate Assistant in French, to begin August 24, 2026, and to end December 9, 2026. The successful applicant will work under the supervision of French faculty in French Lower Division Courses (FR601C / FR611C). This is a paid position for 10 hours/week. Duties may include conducting conversation hours, attending class/leading activities in class, tutoring, reviewing homework, and participating in cultural events.

 

Eligibility 

To be eligible, students must have:  

  • Completed FR 320 Advanced French I by the time of appointment. 
  • A minimum GPA of 3.3. 
  • 12-hour enrollment (if planning on less than 12-hours, please state your reason via email to Dr. Haesen). 

 

Application Instructions 

 To apply, please submit the following documents: 

  • Cover letter in French stating: motivation, interest in the program, and a self-introduction (major; background with French; special interests, skills, or hobbies of relevance; peer tutoring experience and/or mentoring experience, if applicable) (500-700 words). 
  • Unofficial transcript of university grades from the most recent term of study. 
  • One letter of recommendation. 

 

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION 

Please submit your cover letter and transcript via email by August 1, 2026, to Dr. Morgane Haesen at morgane.haesen@austin.utexas.edu . The letter of recommendation should also be sent via email to Dr. Haesen directly from the instructor.  

 

Undergraduate Assistant in Italian

 

The Department of French and Italian at the University of Texas at Austin is currently accepting applications for one Undergraduate Assistant in Italian, to begin August 24, 2026, and to end December 9, 2026. The successful applicant will work under the supervision of an Italian faculty in Italian Lower Division courses (ITL601C / ITL611C). This is a paid position for 10 hours/week. Duties may include conducting conversation hours, participating in the Tavola Italiana and other cultural events, tutoring, and reviewing homework.

 

Eligibility

To be eligible, students must have:

  • Completed ITL320 Advanced Italian by the time of appointment.
  • A minimum GPA of 3.3.
  • 12-hour enrollment (if planning on less than 12-hours, please state your reason via email to Prof. Bush).
