Undergraduate Research Assistantship Program
Each semester the Department of French and Italian offers several undergraduate positions where students can gain experience with faculty-led research and curriculum development, as well as peer-led instruction. Each program has two positions – one undergraduate assistant, and one undergraduate research assistant.
Undergraduate Assistant in French
The Department of French and Italian at the University of Texas at Austin is currently accepting applications for one Undergraduate Assistant in French, to begin August 25, 2025 and end December 8, 2025. The successful applicant will work under the supervision of French faculty in FR 317C Enhancing French Skills. This is a paid position for 10 hours/week. Duties may include conducting conversation hours, leading ice breaker activities in class, tutoring, and participating in cultural events.
Eligibility
To be eligible, students must have:

completed FR 320 Advanced French I by the time of appointment.

a minimum GPA of 3.3.

12-hour enrollment (if planning on less than 12-hours, please state your reason via email to Prof. Mayne).

Undergraduate Research Assistant in French
The successful applicant will work under the supervision of Prof. Haesen to update the current textbook/curriculum, Français Interactif, used in FR601C/FR611C. This is a paid position for 10 hours/week. Curricular duties may include updating course materials such as writing assignments, recording videos around campus and being interviewed in French. Technical duties may also include populating the new textbook website through, for example, creating online activities (flashcards, matching/listening activities, etc.).
Eligibility
To be eligible, students must have:
- completed FR 320 Advanced French I by the time of appointment.
- a minimum GPA of 3.3.
- 12-hour enrollment (if planning on less than 12-hours, please state your reason via email to Prof. Haesen).
- sign a media production release waiver (for the interviews).

Undergraduate Assistant in Italian
The Department of French and Italian at the University of Texas at Austin is currently accepting applications for one Undergraduate Assistant in Italian, to begin August 25, 2025 and end December 8, 2025. The successful applicant will work under the supervision of an Italian faculty in Italian Lower Division courses (ITL601C/ITL611C). This is a paid position for 10 hours/week. Duties may include conducting conversation hours, participating in the Tavola Italiana and other cultural events, tutoring, and reviewing homework.
Eligibility
To be eligible, students must have:
- completed ITL320 Advanced Italian by the time of appointment.
- a minimum GPA of 3.3.
- 12-hour enrollment (if planning on less than 12-hours, please state your reason via email to Prof. Bush).

Undergraduate Research Assistant in Italian
The successful applicant will work under the supervision of Prof. Bush to update the current textbook/curriculum, Giornate italiane, used in ITL601C/ITL611C. This is a paid position for 10 hours/week. Curricular duties may include updating course materials such as writing assignments, recording videos around campus, and being interviewed in Italian. Technical duties may also include creating online activities, editing pre-recorded videos, and working with Prof. Bush to design new listening activities.
Eligibility
To be eligible, students must have:
- completed ITL 320 by time of appointment.
- a minimum GPA of 3.3.
- 12-hour enrollment (if planning on less than 12-hours, please state your reason via email to Prof. Bush).
- be willing to sign a media production waiver, given that the position requires audio and video recording.
