Popular Ecuador Maymester to be Offered Again in 2018; Deadline November 1
Maymester students study high elevation grasslands in Cajas National Park during the 2017 program.

When Prof. Gregory Knapp decided to move Geography’s summer study abroad program in sustainability from Argentina to Ecuador in 2015, at first he was worried if students would appreciate the new country’s opportunities.  He shouldn’t have been worried; the program immediately filled to capacity and has remained one of UT’s largest faculty-led summer abroad programs ever since.  “I believe students appreciate our homestays in Cuenca and in the agricultural village of Villano,” reports Knapp, and “they also like our amazing opportunities to hike and camp in the high Andes, and visit remote sites in the Amazon, while hearing from local agents of change.”  Knapp, Director of Sustainability Studies, is confident that this program provides UT students with a unique opportunity to see how local actors are responding to Ecuador’s commitment to the indigenous conecpt of “buen vivir” as enshrined in the country’ 2008 constitution and re affirmed by the election of Lenin Moreno in 2017.  Deadline for admission is November 1. Information Sessions will be provided, starting on September 21 at 5 pm in CLA 1.302D.
