The Environmental Information Systems Laboratory (EIS Lab) provides comprehensive resources for learning and research involving Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, spatial analysis, hypermedia authoring, and related digital technologies. The facility supports the department's broader mission as a center for the study of Geographic Information Science (GISc), the science of generating, managing, analyzing, and visualizing data in the context of the major thematic concerns of geography.

Since it was founded in 1985 by Kenneth Foote (lab director for 15 years from 1985 to 2000), the laboratory has received over $1.5 million in extramural grants and equipment donations to expand its capabilities. These included three major grants from the National Science Foundation for projects to develop hypermedia educational materials, including materials for the internationally renowned Geographer's Craft and Virtual Geography Department Projects.

The Geography EIS Lab is reserved for students currently enrolled in Geography GIS courses only.

RULES FOR ROOM USE

  • Absolutely no food or tobacco products are allowed within the facility. Drinks must be in approved, spill-proof containers.
  • Work quietly. Don't disturb other users.
  • Lab resources are to be used for academic purposes only.
  • You can be logged in on only one workstation at a time. You must use your own account. Any attempt to bypass security can result in loss of privileges.
  • Illegal copying of proprietary software or commercial CDs will not be tolerated and may result in the loss of lab privileges.
  • You must log out of a workstation before leaving the facility. Do not leave your workstation unattended.
  • If you intend to use a CD, you must use headphones (with 1/8" jack).
  • Do not remove lab materials, such as manuals, from the facility without explicit permission from the lab staff.
  • Clean up after yourself.
  • If a particular piece of hardware or software will not function, please notify the lab manager.
  • Authorized students using the laboratories may be asked supply their own consumable supplies (paper, diskettes, tapes, ink cartridges), when so notified.
  • It is solely the responsibility of users to back up their data.
  • Any authorized user leaving the lab after regular hours must close the main door if nobody else is present.

    • PENALTIES

    • Failure to meet the obligations listed above can result in loss of laboratory privileges, either temporarily or permanently.
    • Students must abide by all copyright and licensing agreements. No infringement can be accepted, including the use of bootlegged software in the laboratories. Those materials that are in the public domain may be copied without cost or penalty, but ask first if you are unsure. Violation of copyright and licensing agreements will be reported to the appropriate University of Texas authorities for disciplinary action and will result in permanent suspension from the laboratories.
    • Intentional damage, misuse or theft of equipment or software will result in permanent suspension from the lab and will be reported to the appropriate University of Texas authorities for disciplinary action.

    SECURITY PROBLEMS

    If the door alarm or security loop system is accidentally set off, then immediately call the UT police at 471-4441.
