SUS 379L Course

The Sustainability Studies degree has an Experiential Learning requirement that can be satisfied by taking SUS 379L or URB 360.

For SUS 379L, internship eligibility is reviewed on a case-by-case basis by Dr. Molly Polk. The course has specific conditions that must be met.

1. Students enrolled in SUS 379L are responsible for securing their internship before the 12th class day of the semester.
2. At least 50% of the internship responsibilities and tasks should be directly related to sustainability.
3. A minimum of 100 work hours must be completed between the first and last class days of the semester.
4. The internship can be paid or unpaid.

In addition, there are seven requirements that the University strictly enforces for internships:

1. The hosting organization must be an established for-profit company with the legal right to transact business in the state of the internship site, an IRS-exempt organization, a governmental entity, or an established, professionally recognized and legal entity of a foreign country.
2. The hosting organization must have a professional, informative website.
3. The internship supervisor must use their organization's email address (no yahoo.com, gmail.com, hotmail.com, etc.).
4. The internship supervisor must provide direct and regular supervision and guidance in person.
5. The internship supervisor must assign meaningful projects with learning components related to sustainability.
6. The hosting organization must provide a professional, established working environment. Virtual/work-from-home or "in the field" internships are eligible for the course with approval of instructor.
7. The supervisor must provide the resources needed to complete the internship responsibilities (i.e. they can't assume you'll use your laptop).
