Constructionist Approaches to Creativity

September 17, 2019

4 - 5pm

BUR 337

Creativity is an important evolutionary adaptation that allows humans to think original thoughts, to find solutions to problems that have never been encountered before and to fundamentally change the way we live. Drawing on data from literary sources, advertisements as well as multimodal corpus data (from the RedHen corpus), this talk shows how constructionist approaches can further our understanding of linguistic creativity. Moreover, it will be argued that the in-depth study of creativity also helps to make Construction Grammar a psychologically as well as cognitively more plausible theory of language.
