Description: Although James Baldwin's "Down at the Cross" is not a conventional work of political theory, the essay speaks to many ultimate questions in politics. What does the essay teach us about the concept of freedom? In this talk, I will seek to answer that question by way of an analysis of the many concepts of liberty that emerge in the essay.
