Political Internship - GOV 374N

The Government Department Political Internship course (GOV 374N) provides students with practical political and policy experience informed by their education at the university. It is offered during the long semesters, and as a nine-week summer course offered completely online so that students who want to fulfill internships outside Austin can enroll in the course. GOV 374N carries an Independent Inquiry flag.

Prospective interns should expect to spend 9-12 hours per week (to reach a total of 150 hours required for the course) as an intern with an organization or entity directly related to government and politics. In addition to their tasks in the approved organization of their choosing, students complete a series of assignments developing a short research-based article for their personal portfolio.

Students should start the process of registering for GOV 374N by completing an information form prior to attempting to register for the course. Registration access is limited to those students who have completed the form and been cleared to register for the course. To start the process, complete the Qualtrics information form you'll find at this link.  Answer all questions until the form tells you you have completed the survey, and remember to submit the form.

The most common internship takes place in a legislative office, but students occupy a wide variety of slots in state agencies, nonprofit political organizations, and political campaigns. Students are required to occupy positions entailing substantive tasks that will provide firsthand experience about politics and government in conjunction with required coursework. For a listing of available internships, please visit the Internship Bulletin Board hosted by The Texas Politics Project. While this is a good starting point for students seeking internships, positions do not have to be listed on the bulletin board to qualify as suitable for the course.

In addition to their tasks in the organization of their choosing, students also meet periodically with the internship coordinator and complete a series of assignments that result in a short piece of public scholarship suitable for inclusion in student portfolios. For more information about the course requirements, students can look at a recent GOV 374N syllabus on the UT website.

For more information contact the political internship coordinator, Dr. James Henson.
