Visiting Research Affiliates

IHS offers a limited number of Visiting Researcher affiliations annually. We welcome visitors who have their own funding and wish to work in-person at the university for any period of time, up to one year. Affiliation enables the scholar to be invited to participate in IHS programs, and affords the scholar a UT ID card, which comes with borrowing privileges at UT Libraries and free bus and train fare on Capital Metro. IHS Research Affiliates must have a sponsoring professor in the Department of History to be considered for affiliation. Please send queries and requests to Courtney Meador, at cmeador@austin.utexas.edu, for consideration of the IHS Director.

Research Affiliate not requiring a J-1 Visa

J-1 Visa Research Affiliate

Please thoroughly read Texas Global's International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) information linked below regarding insurance coverage requirements, English proficiency, minimum funding requirements, and J-1 Exchange Visitor responsibilities:

If approved for J-1 affiliation by the IHS Director, applicants should allow a minimum of six months for processing. The J-1 Visa currently requires a minimum of 3 months for processing and approval, and can take longer in some cases. This does not include time needed for approvals at other coordinating offices on campus (Office of Research Support and Compliance, College of Liberal Arts, Human Resources, and others). Due to enhanced scrutiny of international scholars by U.S. Federal Agencies and given the continued limitations of consular services abroad, the process needs to start well in advance to account for the extra time required to secure an entry visa. Preparing early will allow scholars to acquire the necessary visas to arrive to the United States and begin their UT Austin appointment on time. Once the J-1 is approved, IHS will process the Research Affiliate appointment in coordination with the above-named offices. We rely on applicants to correspond in an efficient and timely manner. For questions, please contact Courtney Meador, at cmeador@austin.utexas.edu.
