Career Exploration

  • Imagine Ph.D. is a free online career exploration and planning tool for Ph.D. students and postdoctoral scholars in the humanities and social sciences.
  • Paula Chambers's The Versatile PhD helps universities provide graduate students with non-academic professional development. Their mission is to help graduate students and PhDs envision, prepare for, and excel in non-academic careers.

Career Development Initiatives

  • Association of American Universities (AAU) Ph.D. Education Initiative
    • The University of Texas at Austin has been selected by the Association of American Universities (AAU) as a pilot participant in Phase I of the AAU Ph.D. Education Initiative, which aims to change the culture surrounding doctoral education at its member institutions.
  • American Historical Association Career Diversity for Historians
    • This AHA initiative works to prepare graduate students and early-career historians for a range of career options, within and beyond the academy. The AHA and three dozen departments from around the country (including UT History) are exploring the culture and practice of graduate education and how to better support the changing needs of PhD students. Learn more about this Career Diversity initiative, access tools and resources, and learn about updates on our activities.
    • American Historical Association Career Contacts: The AHA's Career Contacts program arranges informational interviews between current PhD students (junior contacts) and history PhDs (senior contacts) who have built careers beyond the professoriate. Senior contacts work in a variety of fields, including academic administration, non-profit management, public policy, archives and libraries, K-12 teaching, as well as a range of positions in the federal government and private industry.
    • Texas Graduate Student Internship Guide for graduate students seeking internships. Created in collaboration with AHA Career Diversity Fellows at UT Austin, UT El Paso, and Texas A&M University.
  • Mellon Foundation Engaged Scholars Initiative, UT Austin
Engaged Scholar Initiative: A Texas Model (ESI) aims to honor the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’s visionary goals of enhancing and further expanding the relationships between public universities and communities in the United States. The ESI project joins a number of The University of Texas at Austin’s programs with deep investments in community and a rich history of scholarly and civic collaboration. The Mellon Foundation’s $2 million dollar funding of the project is, in part, a tribute to The University, to institutional interdisciplinary treasures like the Humanities Institute and the Center for Women’s and Gender Studies, and to the numerous luminary scholars, Departments, and Centers housed on campus and in the College of Liberal Arts.
