Note: Students currently completing an undergraduate degree at UT-Austin may be eligible for the Graduate School’s Select Admissions Program as juniors or first-semester seniors. For further information please send a query to HHM@austin.utexas.edu.
Admissions are competitive. The minimum requirements of the Graduate School are as follows:
- A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or a comparable degree from a foreign academic institution
- A grade-point average of at least 3.00 in upper-division (junior- and senior-level) coursework and in any graduate work already completed
- An acceptable score on either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) for International Applicants
Required application materials:
- An online UT Graduate School Application for Admission.
- Pay the Application Fee.
- Complete Transcripts from all institutions of higher education attended, whether or not a degree was received. Transcript guidelines and acceptable methods of submission can be found here.
- A Personal Statement of 500-800 words. Describe your reasons for pursuing graduate study and your academic and professional interests and goals. Please include information about specific topics or areas of interest within the Health Humanities, and how earning the degree would help to advance your academic, professional, or personal goals.
- Three Letters of Recommendation. At least two letters should be from professors with whom the applicant has studied at an institution of higher education (this requirement is negotiable for students who earned their previous degree more than five years ago).
- A Writing Sample of 10-20 pages. Your writing sample will be used to help assess your readiness for graduate-level work in Humanities disciplines. The sample does not need to relate to health or medicine. For instance, you might choose to submit a paper that you wrote for a college class, or two papers if you do not have one that is at least ten pages.
- International Students should also review the UT Graduate School's guidelines for international student applications and submit the appropriate language test scores.
