Admission Requirements
Admissions for Fall 2025 are now open! The priority admissions deadline is December 15, 2024. All applications must be received by March 1, 2025.
Note: Students currently completing an undergraduate degree at UT-Austin may be eligible for the Graduate School’s Select Admissions Program as juniors or first-semester seniors. For further information please send a query to HHM@austin.utexas.edu. The application deadline for Select Admissions is 11/27/24.
Admissions are competitive. The minimum requirements of the Graduate School are as follows:
- A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or a comparable degree from a foreign academic institution
- A grade-point average of at least 3.00 in upper-division (junior- and senior-level) coursework and in any graduate work already completed
- An official score on the GRE (optional)
- An acceptable score on either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) for non-native speakers of English
Applicants to the MA in Humanities, Health and Medicine are required to submit the following:
- An online UT Graduate Application for Admission (link below).
- Pay the application fee.
- Complete Transcripts from all institutions of higher education attended, whether or not a degree was received. Transcript guidelines and acceptable methods of submission can be found here.
- A Personal Statement of 500-800 words, which should include information about specific topics or areas of interest within the health humanities. Applicants should also discuss how the degree would help to advance the applicant’s academic, professional, or personal goals.
- Three Letters of Recommendation. At least two letters should be from professors with whom the applicant has studied at an institution of higher education (this requirement is negotiable for students who earned their previous degree more than five years ago).
- A Writing Sample (10-20 pages). The writing sample will be used to assess your readiness for graduate-level work in humanities disciplines. The sample does not need to relate to health or medicine. For instance, you might choose to submit a paper that you wrote for a college class in the humanities or social sciences. If you do not have one 10-page sample, you may submit two essays for your writing sample.
- International Students should also review the UT Graduate School's guidelines for international student applications.
If you have questions or would like additional information, please send an email to HHM@austin.utexas.edu. Personal consultations with the Graduate Advisor are also available upon request.
