Meet Our Graduate Students

Valeria Borregales

Valeria graduated from Texas A & M University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences and a Spanish minor. While in college she was part of a team that researched how Latinx immigrants’ citizenship status affects their health. Valeria is interested in exploring the role of gender, race, and ethnic identity in medicine both for providers and for patients. She also seeks to promote cultural competence/cultural humility among medical professionals. She is planning for a career in health care.

Karianna Hernandez

Karianna received a B.S. in Biology from Texas State University and recently earned a medical assistant certificate. Planning for a future in health care, Karianna is especially interested in using the humanistic social sciences to explore and promote health equity, especially for marginalized communities.

Julianna Sabile

Julianna graduated in May 2023 and will attend California School of Pediatric Medicine on a Presidential Scholarship starting August 2023. Julianna joins the program with a B.S. in Global Health from University of California-San Diego, where she was an NCAA Division 1 tennis player. While in college she was part of a team studying how atopic dermatitis/eczema affects perceived quality of life among different racial/ethnic groups, especially because the condition is often misdiagnosed among patients of color. Planning for a future in health care,  Julianna is especially interested in social epidemiology, medical anthropology, pediatric populations, and both national and global health disparities.

Maisey Schuler

Maisey earned a B.S. in Evolutionary Anthropology with a Music minor from the University of Michigan. She currently serves as a research assistant in the Neuroimmunology lab at Dell Medical School. Maisey will retain her staff position and attend the HHM MA program part-time. Maisey is especially interested in exploring chronic illness experiences and narratives, creative outlets used by patients and providers, health care justice, and health communication. She plans for a career in health care.

Rebecca Schwarz

Rebecca has a Master of Library Science degree from SUNY-Buffalo and currently serves as an administrative program coordinator in the UT College of Pharmacy. Rebecca will retain her staff position and attend the HHM MA program part-time. Having worked in the theater and also published several short stories in sci-fi/fantasy genre, Rebecca is especially interested in studying and expanding the role of art in health care.
