Julia O’Hanlon Receives Katherine and Philip Patman Scholarship
Julia O'Hanlon

Julia O’Hanlon is studying Humanities and Political Communication. Her Humanities thesis and research revolves around Latinx students, ethnic studies, and activism in the classroom. Specifically, she is looking at ethnic studies as both caring as pedagogy and as an innovative way to teach civics to children. The classroom is a political space, and she is exploring different ways that teachers and faculty can teach students about civic engagement in a way that is relevant to them. Ethnic studies provide a route to transcend traditional civic education courses from teaching what government is, to teaching students their civic power and how to advocate for their communities.
