Who We Are:

The UT Humanities Institute (HI) is the central hub for humanities-centered research at The University of Texas at Austin. We develop, support, showcase, and sustain research for faculty, students, and staff.

HI embraces a broad understanding of the humanities and their potential, engaging in diverse research modes with partners from all levels and sectors of the university and the community. We support research across the humanities, as well as through our distinct initiatives: AI+Science and Culture (AISCI), Digital Humanities (IDH), and the Intersectional Humanities Initiative (IHI).

We are dedicated to expanding the pathways for humanities research and careers, helping researchers in the humanities find the right funding and support opportunities for their projects.

What We Do:

The Humanities Institute (HI) at tThe University of Texas at Austin is pivotal in advancing humanities research across the university, and is the central hub for fostering and sustaining humanities research in the following ways: 

Hub for Humanities Research

HI serves as the primary institution for humanities-centered research at UT Austin. It acts as a bridge connecting faculty, students, and staff with the resources and support they need to pursue innovative research projects. 

Securing and Managing Grants

One of HI’s key functions is to assist researchers in securing and managing top-tier grants. This involves:

  • Identifying Funding Opportunities: HI helps researchers find grants from various sources, such as federal agencies, private foundations, and other funding bodies.
  • Grant Writing Support: HI offers guidance, support, and assistance with submissions, ensuring researchers can successfully submit their projects.
  • Grant Management: Once grants are secured, HI assists in managing the funds, ensuring compliance with funding requirements, and providing administrative support as needed. 

Promoting Innovative Projects

HI is dedicated to promoting innovative humanities projects across the university. This includes:

  • Showcasing Research: HI highlights and elevates the work of faculty, students, and staff through events, publications, and other platforms, bringing visibility to their research and its impact.
  • Fostering Collaboration: HI encourages collaboration by connecting researchers from different departments + fields and promoting a vibrant intellectual community.
  • Providing Resources: HI offers various resources, such as research grants, fellowships, workshops, and tools, to support the development and execution of innovative projects. 

Key Initiatives 

HI’s commitment to advancing humanities research is reflected in our key initiatives:

  • AI+Science and Culture (AISCI): This initiative explores the intersections of artificial intelligence, science, and culture, promoting research that bridges these fields.
  • Digital Humanities (IDH): IDH focuses on integrating digital technologies into humanities research, supporting projects that leverage digital tools and methods.
  • Intersectional Humanities Initiative (IHI): IHI emphasizes the importance of intersectionality in humanities research, encouraging projects from diverse perspectives and experiences. 

Community Engagement

HI also engages with the broader community, both within and outside the university, to promote humanities research. This includes partnerships with local organizations, public lectures, and community-based research projects.
