The Humanities Institute at The University of Texas at Austin is dedicated to fostering research and collaboration. Humanities-centered events are opportunities for scholars, students, and the public to engage in collaborative research, exchange ideas, and learn strategies that will help them secure funding for their projects.
The events also provide opportunities for networking, mentoring, and professional development for faculty, students, and community members.
The events are open to the public and free of charge, unless otherwise noted.

Disarming Toxic Empire
March 21 & 22, 2024
“Disarming Toxic Empire” will bring fresh, transnational, and interdisciplinary approaches to peace, nuclear disarmament, and environmental justice. The Participants will consider and contest the unjust imperial histories and geographies of nuclear testing, production, storage, and weaponry.
The conference will bring together academics, advocates, and artists working through intergenerational channels of memory and justice to respond to nuclear toxicity in all its forms and manifestations in sites ranging from the Navajo Nation and the Pacific Islands to Japan, North Africa, and Ghana.
Hosted by the Sissy Farenthold Fund for Peace and Social Justice of the Rapoport Center, the conference is a collaborative effort among many institutions at the University of Texas and beyond. Fihn’s keynote event is sponsored by the Swedish Excellence Endowment and the Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation Excellence Endowment.

Becoming a Conduit: Body, Mind, and Nuclear Matters in Eiko Otake's Multidimensional Artist Practice

Eiko performs, exhibits, teaches, and writes about the massive violence and environmental disaster caused by nuclear weapons and the failures of nuclear power. She uses her body as a conduit to connect audience members and students to such places as Trinity, New Mexico, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and Fukushima. This conversation with Rosemary Candelario will address the multi-faceted components of her A Body in Fukushima project, how she teaches her interdisciplinary college course about human experiences of nuclear matters, and her translation of and advocacy for literary works by HAYASHI Kyoko, a survivor of the Nagasaki A-Bomb. Health AI for All
April 4th | AT&T Center
The IC2 Institute will be hosting a one-day conference, “Health AI for All” on April 4 in Austin. Join the Institute and UT Good Systems to consider the social, ethical and technical implications of deploying AI in health care. Explore how we might use AI to mitigate the maternal health crisis and identify social risk factors for behavioral health crises such as suicide and opioid addiction. Consider ways to design and deploy AI so that AI-assisted health care leads to better outcomes for diverse populations.
