Advancing the Goals of the Bureau for Experimental Ethnography (BEE)

Dr. Marina Peterson, Dr. Casey Boyle, Dr. Craig Campbell and Dr. Edgar Gómez-Cruz (pictured below) were awarded a Research Working Group (RWG) to help research experimental ethnography. This cross-disciplinary RWG is based in the Departments of Anthropology and Rhetoric & Writing and in the College of Natural Sciences. 

As a Research Working Group, the directors of the Bureau for Experimental Ethnography (BEE) will advance BEE’s goal of fostering the development of research-creation on campus. Research-creation combines artistic expression and academic research, emphasizing transdisciplinary, process-oriented practice whose methods cannot be fully determined in advance and are oriented toward experimentation rather than outputs. The group asks how experimental practices (particularly those aligned with experimental ethnography and multimodal inquiry) might be sustained within existing infrastructures of evaluation, funding, and teaching, while also reworking those infrastructures to accommodate forms of knowledge that emerge through making, sensing, and iterative engagement.
