Dr. Rikki Byrd, Dr. Ariel Evans, Dr. Adele Nelson, and Dr. Cherise Smith (pictured below) are researching and developing a curricular program in curatorial and museum studies. Based in the African and African Diaspora Studies Department (represented by Assistant Professor Dr. Byrd, Research Fellow Dr. Evans, and AADS Chair Dr. Smith), this RWG exists in partnership with Mexican American and Latino Studies and the Department of Art and Art History (represented by Associate Professor Dr. Nelson).
This RWG is an early step in the creation of generational networks of cultural caretakers. The group explores diverse practices for the preservation and interpretation of history and material culture and consults experts in the field while developing a curriculum and professional network for their students. This research functions beyond students’ time at UT to produce ongoing waves of thought leadership in art, its practice, and institutions; and participates in producing a more creative, connected, civil, and democratic society.

This Research Working Group invited Dr. LaCharles Ward, the Supervisory Museum Curator of Photography and Film and Director of the Earl W. and Amanda Stafford Center for African American Media Arts at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, to speak about his academic and career trajectory to the curatorial field, his research in photography, and his work in digitizing the Johnson Publishing Company Archive.
