New Directions in Classical Reception

Dr. Nebojša (Nebo) Todorović, Dr. Alexander Batson, Dr. Matteo Milesi, and Dr. Nassos Papalexandrou (pictured below) were awarded a Research Working Group (RWG) to help research classical reception. This cross-disciplinary RWG is based in the Departments of Classics and Art History and in the School of Civic Leadership.

Classical reception -- the study of how ancient Greek and Roman culture has been transmitted, transformed, appropriated, and contested from antiquity to the present -- has grown in two decades from a specialized subfield into one of the most intellectually mobile areas in the humanities. Its practitioners work across Classics, Comparative Literature, History, Art History, Performance Studies, Film and Media Studies, and Translation Studies. These scholars represent the range of questions now animating the field of Classics: How is antiquity used, and by whom? What counts as evidence? What forms can reception scholarship take? This RWG's intellectual agenda is not only to map the field as it stands but to think actively about where it needs to go, what institutional forms would serve its future, and how UT Austin can be a site of leadership in answering those questions.
