Who We Are
Our team consists of faculty researchers from UT Austin, led by Uvalde native and historian Dr. Monica Muñoz Martinez. We specialize in the fields of history, social work, and sociology. Our expertise lies in conducting trauma-informed and culturally-grounded research with individuals affected by various forms of violence and trauma.
What We Do
UT Austin is partnering with community stakeholders in Uvalde to support long-term healing and improve access to urgently needed trauma-informed and mental health services. Led by Uvalde native and history professor Dr. Monica Muñoz Martinez, the team is developing projects requested by the community. These include effective recovery and resiliency resources for families, a bilingual public health campaign to address mental health stigma, and a study of family life in Uvalde to inform policy decisions.
This initiative addresses critical needs in Uvalde, aiding long-term recovery and providing a model for other rural communities facing similar challenges. Philanthropic investment in this effort will enable the UT team to continue their impactful collaboration with community stakeholders, fostering lasting change.
Our Goals:
-
Support the Uvalde Community: We are committed to assisting the people of Uvalde, Texas, following the Robb Elementary shooting in May 2022. We respond to community members’ needs and requests, providing necessary support and assistance.
-
Empower Rural Communities: Our goal is to build knowledge and develop tools to better address the needs of those affected by mass shootings in rural areas. Our aim is to ensure these communities receive the care and resources required for recovery.
-
Lead with Expertise: By addressing the immediate needs of Uvalde, we strive to become national leaders in understanding and responding to mass violence in rural communities. We are dedicated to developing informed policies, skills, and knowledge based on lessons learned.
