Biography
I grew up in Calgary, Canada and got my B.A. (Honours) in English Literature from Queen’s University, where I also studied French and Art History, held editorial positions on the student newspaper and literary magazine, and worked as an arts writer for newspapers and magazines. I got my PhD in English, with a graduate minor in Women’s and Gender Studies, in 1991. At Cornell, I worked with faculty and other graduate students to establish an English department concentration in Lesbian and Gay Studies. I was hired to teach Feminist Theory in UT’s English Department in 1991. My research and teaching interests include eighteenth-century British, Irish and American literatures, women’s and especially lesbian art and literature, LGBTQ studies, and literary form, especially poetry and the novel.
My book Sister Arts: The Erotics of Lesbian Landscapes won the 2012 Lambda Literary Award. I have chapbook of poems entitled 24 Hours of Men forthcoming in 2018.
