Placements Fall 2018
Here's an update on our recent faculty changes and on where some of our students have gone after leaving the UT Department of Linguistics.
Faculty Updates
- Jenny Singleton joined our faculty this fall as Professor of Linguistics; she comes to us from the Department of Psychology at Georgia Tech. Dr. Singleton will bring us new strengths in child language development and in the study of signed languages and their communities.
- Ian Hancock retired from the university in May 2018 and has been named a professor emeritus. Dr. Hancock has been on the faculty of UT Austin since 1972 and was named a Nowlin Regents Professor in Liberal Arts in 2005. He directed The Romani Archives and Documentation Center (RADOC) and remains a world renowned human rights advocate and Romani expert.
Recent Graduate Student Placements
- Adam Tallman (Ph.D., 2018): postdoctoral fellow at University Ottawa (current), University of Lyon II (in January)
- Cindy Blanco (Ph.D., 2016): Learning Scientist at Duolingo in Pittsburgh
- Natalia Bermúdez (Ph.D., 2018): tenure-track position at University of Chicago
- Lynn Hou (Ph.D., 2016): tenure-track assistant professorship at University of California, Santa Barbara
- Tammi Stout, (Ph.D., 2018): accepted a position at Grammarly in New York City
Recent Undergraduate Student Placements
- Katarina Antolovic (B.A./B.S.C.S.D., 2018) entered the Ph.D. program in Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences at City University of New York.
- Pamela Hildebrand (B.A./B.S.C.S.D., 2018) is attending UT Dallas to pursue a master’s in Communication Disorders to prepare for a career in speech pathology.
- Victoria Jesswein (B.A., 2018) is attending the University of Liverpool for a master’s degree in Archiving.
- Elise LeBovidge (B.A./B.S.A., 2018) entered the Ph.D. program in Speech and Hearing at the University of Washington.
- Kevin Lilley (B.A., 2018) entered the doctoral program in Linguistics at Ohio State.
- Marcus Martinez (B.A., 2018) headed to the University of Washington to start a master’s in Computational Linguistics
- Phoebe Mintz (B.A., 2018) is attending Waubonsee Community College in her hometown of Chicago to study ASL-English interpretation.
- Titan Page (B.A./B.S.C.S., 2018) joined the Ph.D. program in Linguistics at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and plans to focus on computational linguistics.
- Jailyn Pena (B.A., 2018) started her Ph.D. in Linguistics at NYU. Phonetics is her main interest.
