In September 2011, the Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection and the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies (LLILAS) joined forces under a single leadership team. This historic agreement between two venerable units of The University of Texas at Austin is opening new opportunities for collaboration, building stronger institutions, and transforming and elevating Latin American studies and collections at UT.
The aspiration for unified partnership, a brand-new innovation during our previous strategic plan, is now very much a reality, combining not only the library and the research-student unit, but also bringing together the shared resources of our strategic partners, the University of Texas Libraries (UTL) and the College of Liberal Arts (COLA). This collaboration generates previously untapped synergies and connects LLILAS Benson to groundbreaking, innovative opportunities.
The 2018–2022 LLILAS Benson Strategic Plan builds on the now-established strengths of the partnership. In the next five years, we plan to raise Latin American Studies at UT to new heights of excellence in teaching, research, collections, digital scholarship, and through meaningful public engagement with the university community and the broader public. Above all, we strive to further enhance UT’s reputation as the global destination for Latin American studies and collections, and as a model for the public university for the twenty-first century.
