Philosophy

We all have a story to tell.

Our students come from different backgrounds, with a variety of interests. The Spanish Creative Writing Initiative trains students in the craft of writing with the goal of their participating in the public sphere and contributing their knowledge to public debates. Through workshops with UT professors and guest journalists and writers, students in the program learn strategies and acquire tools to tell their stories. In addition to writing essays in their area of specialization, students learn to write for a wider audience.

Led by Professor Gabriela Polit, the Spanish Creative Writing Initiative is based in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and the Teresa Lozano Long Institute for Latin American Studies (LLILAS).

This scholarship funds training for a select group of student writers one of whom is chosen annually to collaborate with a Latin American journalist on a work of creative nonfiction—or crónica—which is ultimately edited and published by Revista Anfibia. The Beca supports students in telling relevant stories of a diverse, rich, and resilient region. Made possible by the support of LLILAS, coordination of the Spanish Creative Writing Initiative, the work of the students, collaboration of journalists from the region, the support and space provided by Revista Anfibia, this project has proven to be a great collective achievement.
